Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, always at the same time as an end and never simply as a means. -- Immanuel Kant
(Handle so, dass du die Menschheit sowohl in deiner Person, als in der Person eines jeden anderen jederzeit zugleich als Zweck, niemals bloß als Mittel brauchst.)

(An ascent to the Heart-gladdening Pavilion in Nanjing) Throughout the middle reaches of the Yangzi, Is a vast stretch of autumnal sombre hue; A drear prospect from river to horizon. Of gloom, one could not have gained a better view. As far as one's eyes can reach are hills upon hills. They appear as woman's hair-guard and chignon. But what do they serve to arouse in one's heart? Sense of frustruation---bitter as well as strong. Rays of the setting sun on the city walls; A few stralling wild geese making plaintive cries; All give to the roamer that I'm in these parts, A keen, painful sense of war-broken home-ties. I unsheathe my sword; examine it blankly. With it, I rap the rail with a look intent. I keep on rapping, till I cover its length. But none understand why I've made the ascent. Of Jiying, of Jin Dynasty, I needn't speak. An official in Luoyang, so much he pined--- For the perch fillets he had at home in Suzhou, As autumn wind rose, from office he resigned. Buying house, acquring land: all for oneself! I'd be ashamed to be such a selfish man; To face a noble character as Liu Bei, Who could only contemn such men as Xu Fan. Yet time relentlessly pass, as water flows. For the country, one entertains doubts and fears. Too much even for an old tree to think such! Who'd send a girl to wipe off a hero's tears! |
Les Misérables -- Victor Hugo
“There is a determined though unseen bravery that defends itself foot by foot in the darkness against the fatal invasions of necessity and dishonesty. Noble and mysterious triumphs that no eye sees, and no fame rewards, and no flourish of triumph salutes. Life, misfortunes, isolation, abandonment, poverty, are battlefields that have their heroes; obscure heroes, sometimes greater than the illustrious heroes.”
“Children at once accept joy and happiness with quick familiarity, being themselves naturally all happiness and joy. ”
